Sun 10 Apr 2011..... four peak challange

Central Brecon Beacons in Wales.....

the route map
We set out after lunch around 13:00hrs in glorious sunny weather to climb the 4 main peaks in the Central Brecon Beacons. The target was to complete the excursion by 18:00hrs latest.

"the boys" have to now carry their own food & water
We decided to use the main tourist footpaths as you will note from our route map. Our aim was to climb Corn Du 873m (2,864ft), Pen y Fan 886m (2,906ft), Cribyn 795m (2,608ft), and finally Fan y Big 719m(2,358ft). In reality we climbed "five" peaks, as on the return journey we had to climb back up Pen y Fan again.

a south-westerly view from Y Gryn
The hills were teeming with tourists,  having a day out on the mountains in the sun, with their main goal to get to the top of Pen y Fan. We even saw a few in slippers :)  Amongst these were a "few" serious hikers and ramblers, who were appropriately prepared for such an excursion, and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the fantastic day it was.

GS & I on Corn Du
We started out from the Storey Arms Centre and headed over the south by south-east face of Y Gryn  on the well formed footpath in a north-easterly direction up to Corn Du. The view in all directions were fantastic!!

From Corn Du we followed the Beacons Way continuing in a north-easterly direction to the top of Pen y Fan. Yet again, the views were stunning. We stopped for a quick cup of tea and then headed on.

GS & I on Cribyn
From Pen y Fan we headed down Craig Cwm Sere / the Beacons Way in a south-easterly direction, and the halfway along changed direction north-east to head up to Cribyn.

GS, KL, & I on Fan y Big
From Cribyn we headed south-east on the well formed footpath on Craig Cwm Cynwyn which joined the Beacons Way to head up to Fan Y Big. We stopped on Fan y Big for our usual break of soup and rolls and enjoyed the glorious view in the sunshine for nearly 45minutes.

on Beacons Way to Pen y Fan on the return journey
On the return journey, we descended Fan y Big and continued on the Beacons Way to Pen y Fan and then on to Corn Du.

KL & GS descending from Corn Du on the return journey
From Corn Du we headed off-path in a south-westerly direction until we joined the footpath by the Blaen TafFawr and headed back down to the Storey Arms Centre.

All in all it was a fantastic excursion in fantastic weather, which gave us some great photo opportunities we hope you enjoy.

We completed the excursion by 18:30hrs and covered a distance of well over 8miles.
