Sun 10 Apr 2011..... four peak challange

Central Brecon Beacons in Wales.....

the route map
We set out after lunch around 13:00hrs in glorious sunny weather to climb the 4 main peaks in the Central Brecon Beacons. The target was to complete the excursion by 18:00hrs latest.

"the boys" have to now carry their own food & water
We decided to use the main tourist footpaths as you will note from our route map. Our aim was to climb Corn Du 873m (2,864ft), Pen y Fan 886m (2,906ft), Cribyn 795m (2,608ft), and finally Fan y Big 719m(2,358ft). In reality we climbed "five" peaks, as on the return journey we had to climb back up Pen y Fan again.

a south-westerly view from Y Gryn
The hills were teeming with tourists,  having a day out on the mountains in the sun, with their main goal to get to the top of Pen y Fan. We even saw a few in slippers :)  Amongst these were a "few" serious hikers and ramblers, who were appropriately prepared for such an excursion, and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the fantastic day it was.

GS & I on Corn Du
We started out from the Storey Arms Centre and headed over the south by south-east face of Y Gryn  on the well formed footpath in a north-easterly direction up to Corn Du. The view in all directions were fantastic!!

GS, KL, & "the boys" on Pen y Fan
From Corn Du we followed the Beacons Way continuing in a north-easterly direction to the top of Pen y Fan. Yet again, the views were stunning. We stopped for a quick cup of tea and then headed on.

GS & I on Cribyn
From Pen y Fan we headed down Craig Cwm Sere / the Beacons Way in a south-easterly direction, and the halfway along changed direction north-east to head up to Cribyn.

GS, KL, & I on Fan y Big
From Cribyn we headed south-east on the well formed footpath on Craig Cwm Cynwyn which joined the Beacons Way to head up to Fan Y Big. We stopped on Fan y Big for our usual break of soup and rolls and enjoyed the glorious view in the sunshine for nearly 45minutes.

on Beacons Way to Pen y Fan on the return journey
On the return journey, we descended Fan y Big and continued on the Beacons Way to Pen y Fan and then on to Corn Du.

From Corn Du we headed off-path in a south-westerly direction until we joined the footpath by the Blaen TafFawr and headed back down to the Storey Arms Centre.

All in all it was a fantastic excursion in fantastic weather, which gave us some great photo opportunities we hope you enjoy.

We completed the excursion by 18:30hrs and covered a distance of well over 8miles.

Thurs 07 Apr 2011....indoor bouldering again

KL seems happy to join us
After our last session, I was pretty convinced that training in the bouldering center was an ideal controlled environment for the 2 young ones to start, and also ideal for building up our core strength in readiness for a active season this summer.

GS confidently moving up a route
With this in mind I managed to convince KL to join us. He too seemed impressed with the setup and took to the routes "like a duck to water"!

KL topping out on a route
We have now set Thursday session for adults training. However, GS still tagged along!! Yet again we visited the centre late in the evening and found it to be quiet, with only a handful of climbers in the whole complex......great!!

GS working on an overhang problem
We spent some time refining our basic skills and then progressed onto a few V0 to V2 grade routes, which tested our skills and endurance to the max.

me topping out
Young GS seemed to identify the problems on the routes confidently and quickly, but seemed to require a bit more strength and endurance to successfully progress the adult routes to completion. But in saying this, for his age he is performingexcellantly on these adult walls!!

GS attempting a complex route
Some of my old climbing partners advice of "bouldering being a young man's game" proved right. But with persistence and a positive training regime, I am sure us "old timers" can give these youngsters a run for their money in due course!!

KL "bushed" after a hard route
All in all it was an excellent session, which has definitely spurred on our determination to regularly continue with bouldering as a part of our training regime.
